City hosts successful Career Expo days, empowering youth through opportunities

This past Friday, 17 April 2026, the City of Cape Town Corporate Services Directorate hosted a successful Career Expo at the Delft Civic Centre. The event drew an impressive total of 649 attendees, including 542 learners and 48 unemployed youth, highlighting the strong demand for access to career guidance, skills development and employment opportunities within local communities.

‘The City of Cape Town plays a leading role in education and training in the Western Cape. We do so not only because we employ over 30 000 staff members, but also because we believe that part of the solution to the many problems facing our communities, from drug abuse to crime, lies in creating learning and employment opportunities for youth and job seekers,’ said Alderman Theresa Uys, Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services.

‘Youth deserve to be provided with a chance to study and then gain valuable work experience, the City has invested over R186 487 405,41 million into our own workplace skills plan this year in order to address these two goals and to build a solid and equitable pipeline of promotion that benefits our most vulnerable employees and residents.’

This Friday’s Career Expo, in Delft, brought together learners from ten schools across the province; namely Delft High School, Leiden High School, Simunye Secondary School, Manzomthombo High School, Malibu High School, Mfuleni Technical Academy, Rosendaal Secondary School, Soneike High School, Mfuleni Secondary School and Westbank High School.

A wide range of external stakeholders contributed to the event’s success, including higher education institutions, SETAs, government departments, and private sector organisations.

Internal City departments present included Human Resources, Law Enforcement, Fire Services, SmartCape, Water and Sanitation, EPWP and CDW, Library and Information Services, and Traffic Services.

The Corporate Services Career Expos form part of the City’s broader strategy to equip young people with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed in a competitive job market. By connecting learners and job seekers with industry leaders and training providers, the City continues to build a strong pipeline of future talent while addressing unemployment and social challenges.

‘As a caring City, we are focused on creating more opportunities for the young leaders of tomorrow. To foster economic growth, we need to see more young people lift themselves out of poverty. Everything we do over the next five years is geared towards this outcome. Today we offer students and unemployed youth much-needed learning and employment opportunities, as we know that there are so many young people who are struggling to get a job and who do not have money to study further,’ concluded Alderman Uys.

Earlier this month, on Friday, 9 April 2026, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme, in collaboration with the Conray Marcus Youth Development, also successfully hosted a well-attended Career Exhibition at the Wynberg Civic Centre. The event welcomed learners from Wittebome Senior Secondary Focus College, Wynberg Senior Secondary, Immaculata Roman Catholic Girls High School, Dominican School for the Deaf, Paramount High School, Oracle Academy and Darus Na’im High School.
